Penetration into and exploitation of contaminated soils by roots of hyperaccumulator plants is a prerequisite for efficient removal of heavy metals, i.e. efficacy of phytoextraction. This work was undertaken to study the development of roots of the Zn-hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens under various conditions of soil contamination. Rhizoboxes were constructed with a removable plastic front cover, and filled with soils containing different amounts and forms of metals (Zn, Cd and Pb). Treatments were: homogeneous soil profile, superposition of three layers, inclusion of contaminated soil into uncontaminated soil, or inclusion of uncontaminated soil into uniformly contaminated soil. Four seedlings were transplanted into each rhizobox, and development of the root system was periodically recorded for 133 days. At harvest, the biomass and size of the rosette of aerial parts were determined. The aerial biomass/root length fraction as well as the kinetics of root development varied according to the presence and localization of Zn. The distribution and morphology of roots at harvest were strongly dependent upon the metal content and form in soil. Roots exhibited a high affinity for the Zn-contaminated patches and showed two distinct morphologies according to the concentration of Zn in soil. We investigated bacterial populations associated with the Zn hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens subsp. calaminaria grown in a soil collected from an abandoned Zn-Pb mine and smelter in Plombières, Belgium. The bacterial population of the nonrhizospheric soil consisted of typical soil bacteria, some exhibiting multiple heavy-metal resistance characteristics that often are associated with polluted substrates: 7.8% and 4% of the population survived in the presence of elevated levels of Zn (1 mM) and Cd (0.8 mM), respectively. For the bacterial population isolated from the rhizosphere, the comparable survival rates were 88 and 78%. This observation indicates a selective enrichment of the metal-resistant strains due to an increased availability of the metals in soils near the roots compared with nonrhizospheric soil. The endophytic inhabitants of the roots and shoots were isolated, identified, and characterized. Although similar endophytic species were isolated from both compartments, those from the rhizoplane and roots showed lower resistance to Zn and Cd than the endophytic bacteria isolated from the shoots. In addition, root endophytic bacteria had additional requirements. Contrary to the rootresiding inhabitants, the shoot represented a niche rich in metal-resistant bacteria and even seemed to contain species that were exclusively abundant there. These differences in the characteristics of the bacterial microflora associated with T. caerulescens might possibly reflect altered metal speciation in the different soils and plant compartments studied.  相似文献

It is hypothesized that metal hyperaccumulator plants have specific rhizosphere conditions, potentially modifying the bioavailability of soil metals. This article aims to further the knowledge about the rhizosphere of the hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens, focusing on its microflora isolated from metalliferous soils collected in situ where the plants grow naturally. We characterized the cultivable microbial communities isolated from the rhizosphere of one population of this Ni hyperaccumulator species grown on a serpentine soil. The rhizosphere soil harbored a wide variety of microorganisms, predominantly bacteria, confirming the stimulatory effect of the T. caerulescens rhizosphere on microbial growth and proliferation. We tested the hypothesis that the rhizosphere of T. caerulescens influences (1) the metabolic diversity of the bacterial community and (2) the bacterial resistance to metals. The principal component analysis of the Biolog plate's data confirmed a structural effect of the rhizosphere of T. caerulescens on bacterial communities. The percentage of Ni-resistant bacteria was higher in the rhizosphere than in the bulk soil, suggesting a direct effect of the rhizosphere on Ni tolerance, reflecting a greater bacterial tolerance to Ni in the rhizosphere.  相似文献

The hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens J & C Presl. was grown in seven different soils collected from around Europe that had been contaminated with heavy metals by industrial activity or the disposal of sewage sludge to land. Zinc accumulation factors (shoot concentration/initial soil solution concentration) ranged from 3500–85 000 with a mean value of around 36 000. This compares with mean accumulation factors of 636, 66 and 122 for Cd, Ca and Mg, respectively. The concentration of Zn in the shoots was much greater than in the roots. The total removal of Zn and Cd ranged from 8 to 30 and from 0.02 to 0.5 mg kg-1 soil, respectively. The Zn concentration in shoots of T. caerulescens correlated, using a curvilinear relationship, with the initial Zn concentration in soil solution (R2 = total Zn 0.78; Zn2+ 0.80). There was no relationship between the uptake of Zn and the total Zn concentration in the soil. In most soils, solution pH increased only slightly after growth of T. caerulescens, indicating that acidification was not the mechanism used to mobilise Zn in the soil. Dissolved organic carbon concentrations generally increased but characterisation of the component organic compounds was not attempted. The concentrations of Zn and Cd in soil solution decreased considerably after growth of T. caerulescens. The percentages of Zn and Cd in soil solution present as free ions also decreased. However, the decrease of Zn in soil solution after growth accounted for only about 1% of the total Zn uptake by T. caerulescens. This was much lower than for Cd, Ca and Mg. The results suggest that either T. caerulescens was highly efficient at mobilising Zn which was not soluble initially, or the soils used had large buffering capacities to replenish soil solution Zn within a short time. This work highlights the need to investigate the role of root exudates on the mobilisation of Zn and Cd in soils by the hyperaccumulator T. caerulescens.  相似文献

Previous studies of colour polymorphism in the Snow Goose [ Anser caerulescens ; failed to consider and reject alternative hypotheses to that of a single locus with incomplete dominance. Utilizing data from a long-term study of a wild population, we test the validity of these earlier results by considering two alternatives: (1) a single locus with multiple allelism and (2) a threshold polygenic system. Our analyses corroborate the original model, but emphasize the importance of testing all plausible hypotheses.  相似文献

The consequences of philopatric and dispersal behaviours under changing environmental conditions were examined using data from the colony of Lesser Snow Geese (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) breeding at La Pérouse Bay, Manitoba, Canada. In response to increased population size and decreased food abundance over time, increasing numbers of family groups have been dispersing from the traditional feeding areas. Goslings from dispersed broods were significantly heavier (7.3%), and had longer culmens (3.1%), head lengths (2.6%) and marginally longer tarsi (1.9%) on average than goslings that remained within La Pérouse Bay itself. These differences were consistent in each of 5 years. There was no evidence that the larger size of dispersed goslings was due to either a tendency for larger adults to disperse to alternative sites, or increased mortality of smaller goslings among dispersed broods. The most likely cause for the larger size of goslings from dispersed broods was the significantly greater per capita availability of the preferred salt-marsh forage species at non-traditional brood-rearing areas. The larger goslings in non-traditional feeding areas showed significantly higher firstyear survival, suggesting that the use of deteriorating traditional feeding areas may currently be maladaptive in this population.  相似文献

Aerobic methane (CH4) emission from plant vegetative parts has been confirmed by many studies. However, the origin of aerobic CH4 from plants and its emission from reproductive parts have not been well documented. We determined the effects of developmental stages (early, mid, late) and incubation conditions (darkness, dim light, bright light) on CH4 emissions from stinkweed (Thlaspi arvense) capsules. We found that CH4 emissions from capsules varied with developmental stage and incubation light. Methane emission was highest for the late harvested capsules and for those incubated under lower (dim) light condition. Our results also showed a significant negative correlation between CH4 emission and capsule moisture content. We conclude that CH4 emissions vary with capsule age and diurnal light environment.  相似文献

Abstract: An assumption of mark-recapture studies is that the marker has no effect on the animal. Neck bands have been used extensively for goose research, but there has long been concern that they may have negative effects on some demographic parameters, and recent studies have yielded contradictory results. We evaluated the effects of neck bands on adult female greater snow geese (Chen caerulescens atlantica) by contrasting breeding propensity and apparent survival of geese marked with both a plastic neck band and a metal leg band and those marked solely with metal leg bands over an 11-year period on Bylot Island, Nunavut Territory, Canada. The use of multistate mark-recapture models also allowed us to estimate neck band loss and to obtain survival and capture probabilities that were not biased by such loss. Finally, we tested the effects of neck bands on other reproductive parameters (laying date, clutch size and nest success) over a 3-year period. Neck-banded females had decreased clutch size and capture probabilities, but their apparent survival rate, nest initiation and hatching dates, and nest survival were not affected compared to leg-banded only or unbanded females. Breeding propensity, indexed by capture probabilities of neck-banded females was, on average, 48% lower that that of leg-banded-only females but clutch size was only 10% lower. Neck band loss of females was low in this population (3% per year). We urge researchers to be cautious in the use of neck bands for estimation of population parameters and that the potential negative effects of neck bands be assessed as it is likely to be species-specific.  相似文献
